I was very pleased by the work recently completed by MCP Chimney and Masonry to line my chimney flue in my 1890 Capitol Hill row house to bring it up to the local DCRA building codes. The plumber who had just installed a new hot water heater in my basement noted that the lack of a chimney liner would have to be remedied before the installation could meet local inspection requirements. It appears that modern gas appliances don't discharge exhaust at temperatures hot enough to live with old-fashioned unlined chimney flues. Unfortunately, the subcontractor offered by my plumber to install the liner noted an obstruction in my old flue (no doubt a remnant of a dining room fire place covered over decades earlier) that would impede routine, simple installation of a liner and declined to take the job. I was informed that demolition of a dining room wall could well be required to remove the obstruction and the subcontractor apparently was not up to that. The plumber then decided to explore with DCRA the possibility of using forced air in lieu of the installation of a liner, but he was getting little encouragement from DCRA. I then approached MCP Chimney and Masonry to secure a liner, and I was given a great education by Tim Owen of MCP on the importance of chimney liners to avoid both leakage of exhaust gases and masonry damage caused by condensation of gases unable to make it all the way up to the outside air. He was willing to perform any necessary demolition, but he also took on the challenge of maneuvering around the obstruction and offered me a $1,000 discount if installation of the flue liner could be accomplished without demolition. Sure enough, MCP succeeded in completing the job without any demo of my dining room wall. The work was completed cheerfully and expeditiously in just a few hours, and they left without any mess. MCP was willing to do the work, knew what they were doing, and did it well.
We contracted them for a full chimney lining replacement and installation of a hearth. They helped us understand cost options and wood vs gas before the work began (we chose to keep it wood for now). They had to come out across two days because they found some “odd” masonry in our firebox and were good about communicating their delays. Across the chimney work they had excellent craftsmanship and made some valuable suggested improvements (which were done at no extra cost). When we talked with them about some issues with the hearth a few days later they were out next day and resolved everything. We were happy to work with their whole team. They also did all this around the holidays with no coordination issues.
Great fireplace and chimney inspection! Justin was honest, friendly, professional, and he answered all of my questions. Highly recommend!
Easy making appointment. Stayed in touch confirming appointment. Showed up on time. Two technicians were polite, professional, knowledgeable, and informative. Would, and have recommended to family and friends.
Great people. Very knowledgeable and experienced. And prices are great.! I will most definitely use them again. 5 stars ⭐️
I had a great experience with the masonry division, who poured a concrete patio and re-did the brick paving on a walkway. They were super efficient, exceptionally hardworking and the work looks amazing. Hard to believe this yard was a crumbling mess a few weeks ago! Also want to give a shout to customer service. I had called asking for some advice on how manage some lawn area that had been (unavoidably) damaged in the process. Grass seed and hay were delivered a few hours later. Highly recommend
Tim was polite, efficient and very knowledgeable. He provided us with a detailed analysis of the problems with our fireplaces and chimney and a full set of options regarding possible solutions. Particularly appreciated were his tips on avoiding expensive repairs. I would enthusiastically recommend this company to all having chimney and/or fireplace problems. Donald Kursch
MCP assessed and completed a comprehensive repair and reconstruction of our nearly 50-year old brick chimney with multiple liners. We would recommend them without hesitation or reservation. You probably can find cheaper companies, but it would be impossible to do better.
