Develop an Escape Plan and Stay Alive

At MCP Chimney and Masonry, your comfort and safety is our No. 1 concern. We work hard to keep your fireplace and chimney in good working order by providing thorough cleanings and inspections to identify and fix any potentially dangerous issues.

But regardless of how safe your chimney is, house fires can still occur and we encourage you and your family to develop an escape plan to ensure everyone gets out safely.

That’s the campaign message for this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 8-14. The theme, “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” reinforces the importance of having an escape plan. But in addition to having a plan, you and your family should practice it twice a year and teach your children how to leave a burning home. And once you’re outside, stay outside. Never re-enter a burning house.

But there are other ways to help prevent a house fire and increase your safety.

  • Equip your home with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. Early detection of fire is critical in saving lives. Smoke alarms should be installed on every floor of your home, and fire extinguishers should be accessible and in good working order.
  • Carefully watch food cooking in your kitchen. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking fires are the No. 1 cause of home fires and home injuries. The leading cause is unattended cooking.
  • Talk to your children about fire and the danger presented by candles, lighters, and matches. Tell them never to play with these items so they understand the importance of fire safety.
  • Lastly, have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually. An annual cleaning will rid the structure of creosote, a flammable by-product of burning that adheres to the interior walls of your chimney. Creosote, in intense heat, can catch fire that can spread throughout your home.

MCP Chimney can perform a thorough cleaning and inspection to help keep you and your family safe. By following the tips above and keeping your chimney clean, you and your family will be well equipped to stay safe should the unthinkable happen.
