MCP Handles All Three Levels of Chimney Inspections

Level One
A basic visual inspection of the chimney, flue, and exterior to check for blockages, water intrusion, creosote buildup, or obvious signs of damage. This is recommended if you haven't made changes to your fireplace and regularly maintain your chimney or if you are updating your gas/oil furnace, broiler, or hot water heater.

A more detailed inspection, often required when buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, or if you’re changing fuel types or installing a new liner. It includes a camera scan of the flue to check for hidden cracks, blockages, or deterioration.

The most in-depth inspection, used when serious damage or structural concerns are present. It may require removing parts of the chimney, walls, or ceiling to investigate hidden hazards. Level 3 inspections are typically done after a fire or major storm damage.
Our Chimney Inspection Process in Four Steps
Step 1: Initial Evaluation
We start by assessing your chimney’s condition to identify damage or required modifications. From here, our certified technicians determine whether a Level 1, 2, or 3 inspection is needed. MCP has been performing these evaluations since 1991, so you can bet we know what to look for and how to detect the safety hazards that could put your home at risk.
Step 2: In-Depth Investigation
If we find hazardous blockages or structural defects, we conduct a more detailed inspection. This step is often needed after severe weather events and includes specialized imaging tools to assess hidden issues. At this stage, no demolition or structural removal is necessary.
Step 3: Accessing Concealed Areas
For serious damage or obstructions, we may need to remove exterior chimney walls or attached components to gain direct access. This step is only required for severe issues but ensures we can fully diagnose the problem and identify all necessary repairs.
Step 4: Repair Recommendations
Once the inspection is complete, we’ll provide a detailed restoration or repair sheet to get your chimney back in working order. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have at this time or at any stage of the inspection process. In addition, we offer excellent financing options which we’d be happy to share with you as well.

“Very professional and thorough…”
“We just had our chimney inspected this morning by Tanner from MCP Chimney & Masonry, who was very professional and thorough. We originally scheduled for an inspection and a cleaning, but the cleaning was unnecessary so he came in lower than the quoted price, which was great and unexpected. He also was very informative about the features of our existing fireplace as well as answering questions about a potential switch to gas. We are definitely keeping MCP Chimney & Masonry on our list of home service companies.” – Jen G.B.
Frequently Asked Questions
You should schedule an inspection if you notice:
- Smoke backing up into your home
- A strong, unpleasant odor from the fireplace
- White or black stains on the chimney exterior
- Loose or deteriorating bricks and mortar
- A recent storm or earthquake that could have caused damage
- When buying or selling your home
Over time, creosote buildup, debris, and weather damage lead to serious chimney safety hazards, including chimney fires or carbon monoxide leaks.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends a chimney inspection at least once a year to ensure your fireplace and venting system are safe to use. Regular inspections help catch minor issues before they turn into expensive repairs. Which is why we recommend that if you use your fireplace frequently, a mid-season checkup is a great choice for most homeowners.
If your chimney hasn’t been inspected in over a year or you suspect damage, it’s best to wait until a professional has checked it for safety. Using a fireplace with a blocked flue or excessive creosote buildup can lead to smoke backing up into your home, carbon monoxide exposure, or even a chimney fire. If you're unsure about the last time your chimney was inspected, scheduling one before the first fire of the season is the safest choice.
