Keeping Your Pets Safe

There are few things in life that are as comforting as a crackling fire and curling up with your four-legged friend. But without the right safety precautions, you risk putting your dog, cat, or any other pet, in harm’s way.

There are several tips and considerations needed to keep your pet safe from your fireplace, including:

– Using a gate to separate your pet from the fire. Consider a decorative wrought iron gate, or less expensive — yet functional — baby gate. A simple gate will keep your pet away from the intense heat and dangerous flames.

– Keeping the glass doors on your fireplace closed, even when not burning a fire. While it seems sensible to keep your glass doors closed when a fire is raging, keeping them closed after the fire will keep ash and other fireplace debris off of your pet.

– Keeping pet beds and toys away from the fire. Check any tags on beds or toys regarding flammability and, if playing with your pet when a fire is burning, throw toys away from the fireplace.

– Making sure your fireplace tools are stored out of reach from your pets. Fireplace tools are not only hot and often sharp, they can be dirty. Keep them away from your pets.

With these few suggestions in place, your pets will be able to coexist with your roaring fire without any risk of harm.
