Freestanding stoves

Freestanding stoves function in much the same way as wood inserts; the key difference is that they sit on the hearth of a fireplace as opposed to inside the fire box or they sit on a standalone hearth pad. The benefit of these stoves is that they generally provide a bit more radiant heat in the room they are located in because less of it is lost in the chimney. Neither type of installation is necessarily better than the other, it more so boils down to personal preference from the user.
